01/6Happy Birthday, Priyadarshan: From ‘Gopura Vasalile’ to ‘Snegithiye’, ‘Lesa Lesa’, ‘Nimir’ and ‘Sometimes’ – a look at five box office hits of the legend in Tamil cinema
The legendary director Priyadarshan celebrates his 63rd birthday today. The originally Malayalam director is famous for his engaging screenplay and he is known to have helmed movies in Malayalam, Tamil, Hindi, and Telugu languages. But today, we will take a look at five of his superhit Tamil films.
‘Gopura Vasalile’, a black comedy, stars Karthik and Bhanu Priya in the lead roles. This was Priyadarshan’s debut film as director in Tamil cinema in the year 1991 since his first film ‘Chinamanikkuyile’ was unreleased. The story of the film has borrowed some subplots from the Malayalam film ‘Pavam Pavam Rajakumaran’. ‘Gopura Vasalile’ was well-received at the box office and ran for more than 100 days at many theatres.
The 2000 mystery thriller ‘Snegithiye’ is based on the story of the 1999 Marathi film ‘Bindhaast’. The film features Jyothika, Sharbhani Mukherjee, Tabu, and Ishita Arun – all females, in the lead roles. The film had received positive reviews from critics but failed to get magical numbers at the box office. Except for the ‘Kannukulle’ song, rest of the numbers in the film were composed by Vidyasagar, while SP Venkatesh did the background score for the film.
The 2003 romantic Tamil comedy ‘Lesa Lesa’ stars Shaam and Trisha in lead roles, while Madhavan appears in a cameo. Actor Vivek’s comedy in this film is highly enjoyable and very popular even today. This film is a partial remake of the 1998 Malayalam film ‘Summer in Bethlehem’, which was co-written by Ranjith and Venu Nagavally.
‘Nimir’ is a 2018 remake of the super hit Malayalam film ‘Maheshinte Prathikaaram’ starring Fahadh Fasil in the lead role. Udhayanidhi Stalin plays the lead role in the Tamil version, and he gave his best performance in the film. The story of the film revolves around a photographer, who attempts to defuse a conflict between his friend Crispin and a group of youngsters passing through their village. Namitha Pramod has paired opposite Udhayanidhi Stalin in the film, while Samuthirakani plays a supporting role.
06/6‘Sometimes’ aka ‘Sila Samayangalil’
‘Sometimes’ aka ‘Sila Samayangalil’ was not released on the big screens and got released directly on a digital streaming platform in 2016.
