Deepika Padukone has impressed one and all with her professional trajectory, from playing a righteous Queen in ‘Padmaavat’ to narrating the story of an acid attack survivor in ‘Chhapaak’. Despite experiencing a professional high, it has not really been an easy journey for Deepika. She battled depression and went on to speak about the condition a few years back. Deepika also set up the foundation Live Love Laugh to help those facing depression, anxiety and also spread a word about mental health awareness. 02/9Deepika Padukone quoted Martin Luther King at WEF
Deepika Padukone received the Crystal Award at the World Economic Forum in Davos today and spoke at length about mental health. “Mental illness has presented us all with a very tough challenge, but in my love hate relationship with the illness has taught me much. To be patient for one, that you are not alone, but most importantly that there is hope,” said Deepika in her acceptance speech. The actress concluded her speech by quoting Martin Luther King and she said, “For in the words of Martin Luther King, everything that is done in this world is done with hope.”
03/9Deepika Padukone felt lost and alone amidst a lot of people
In a blog Deepika had stated that she was to shoot for a song sequence and while everyone was in a celebratory mood, she felt lost and alone. She locked herself in her trailer’s washroom and started crying. Deepika stated that she first stated experiencing the symptoms in 2014, she woke up with an empty feeling in the stomach and the urge to cry. The actress revealed that she felt exhausted and sad all the time, all that she wanted to do then was to sleep.
04/9Deepika Padukone put up a brave face for her parents
Deepika had revealed in a blog that while she was battling depression, her parents visited her in Mumbai. She put up a brave face through their stay but the moment they packed their bags and headed for the airport, Deepika revealed she broke down in tears. Despite family support, great films and dating the man of her dreams, Deepika stated that she was suffering. Her parents advised professional help and the actress was diagnosed with clinical depression.

Soon after Deepika opened up about her struggle with mental health, the actress stated in an interview with a daily that after she was suggested to take medication. Deepika stated that she was resistant and took a second opinion. After finally accepting the condition Deepika revealed that she underwent counseling as well as took medication and felt much better later.

Deepika Padukone has always been at the forefront of spreading a word about mental health. Speaking to IANS, the actress had stated, “We need to stigmatize mental illness and spread awareness about mental health. I know in the current scenario we lead stressful lives but you have to keep reminding yourself that it is important to live, love and laugh. After all that is what life is all about. Most importantly for people like me who have had an experience with anxiety and depression, I think it is important to know that there is hope.”

After Deepika opened up about her battle, the actress stated that she felt happy to share her story with everyone. “Sharing my experience with depression made me feel lighter. It was like a huge weight lifted off my shoulders, I felt transparent with no fear of being judged. Just felt that it was important for me to share something that was very personal to me, something that had changed my life, and something that I felt had a lot of stigma when I was experiencing it,” Deepika told PTI.

Deepika stated that her purpose behind sharing her story of depression was to help someone else in need. “I remember telling myself and all the people around me during my journey of recovery, and saying that if by sharing my story, I can even save one life… The purpose is that… Having this conversation is itself a huge step in that direction of change that our country really needs to see, and we are definitely headed in the right direction. But we have a long way to go,” the ‘Padmaavat’ actress had told PTI.
09/9When Deepika told Ranveer Singh about her depression
Ranveer Singh knew about Deepika Padukone’s battle with depression before their wedding and stood by his lady love like a rock. In an interview with Filmfare Ranveer had stated, “Whoever is suffering has to get over it themselves. It has to come from inside.” When asked if Deepika’s condition affected their relationship in any way, Ranveer quipped, “That’s okay. I had made up my mind a long time back that she’s the one for me. So, I was…I was unfazed.”
